Hydrogen Leak Causes Fire at Oil Refinery
Sixty firefighters battled a blaze at a Unocal refinery in Wilmington on Friday after a control device failed, causing gaseous hydrogen to spew into the air and ignite, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.
Battalion Chief Larry Schneider said the fire broke out about 1:30 p.m. and spread to a nearby tank filled with the liquid flammable naphtha. Firefighters extinguished the fire in an hour.
