Sandoval Runs Record to 29-0 With Victory in Non-Title Fight
World Boxing Assn. bantamweight champion Richie Sandoval ran his record to 29-0 Friday night before a crowd of about 2,000 at Cal Poly Pomona with a unanimous 10-round decision over Hector Cortez in a non-title bout in which neither fighter made his contracted weight limit.
Sandoval weighed 127 1/2 pounds, 4 1/2 pounds over his contracted weight. He thus was fined 10% of his purse, which was contingent on the gate, by the state athletic commission.
Cortez also was fined 10% of his purse since he weighed 125, two pounds over his contracted weight.
The bout was seen as a tuneup for Sandoval, who will defend his 118-pound title March 10 at Las Vegas, against Gabe Canizales of Loredo, Tex.
