Vacationers often dream of a life in the mountains. But to actually stay there can mean hustling different careers that change with the seasons. So when Sydney Quinn’s winter job as a ski instructor ends, she turns to the workshop in her Mammoth home, right, to hand-stitch sheepskin mitts, moccasins and vests for the Mammoth crafts fair that’s held every September.

In a local pine grove, Vern Clevenger, bottom left, has set up his color photos next to Quinn’s booth at the fair. Clevenger hung dry wall in condos to buy his 4x5 view camera; every summer it goes on top of his backpack for hundreds of miles of rambling and shooting.

Peter Nemes, bottom right, teaches chemistry at UC Santa Cruz in the winter. But when finals are over, he’s off to the Sierra Nevada, where he is serving an apprenticeship as a climbing guide.
