College Basketball Roundup : St. John’s Gets Past Georgetown

Walter Berry, playing on a sprained left ankle, scored 22 points, 14 in the second half, as No. 10-ranked St. John’s defeated No. 11 Georgetown, 60-58, in a Big East Conference game Monday night at Landover, Md.

Berry injured the ankle Saturday in a game against Boston College. “It felt a lot better,” he said. “I was very surprised how well I played with it and how much I moved.”

Berry played the full 40 minutes, hit 8 of 15 shots and grabbed 8 rebounds, all in the first half.

Trailing 58-56, Georgetown then had a chance to tie it after Shelton Jones of St. John’s was called for charging with 45 seconds left, but Mark Jackson of St. John’s stripped the ball from David Wingate and Jones picked it up. Jones later made one of two free throws for a three-point lead with eight seconds left.

A layup by Georgetown’s Michael Jackson with three seconds left cut it to 59-58, but Jones again was fouled and made the first of two free throws for the final margin.

In snapping the Hoyas’ eight-game winning streak, the Redmen raised their record to 23-3 and 10-2 in the Big East, second only to Syracuse (9-1). Georgetown fell to 19-4, 9-3.

Nevada Las Vegas 79, UC Santa Barbara 71--Anthony Jones scored 25 points and Armon Gilliam had 23 points and 10 rebounds as the ninth-ranked Rebels won a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Las Vegas.

The victory was the 15th in a row for the Rebels, who have a 12-0 PCAA record and a 24-2 overall mark.

UNLV and Bradley, which defeated Illinois State earlier Monday, are tied with the longest current winning streak in major college basketball.

UCSB’s record dropped to 4-8 in conference play and 9-12 overall. The Gauchos, who haven’t beaten UNLV in the 14 games between the schools, played the Rebels tougher than expected, never trailing by more than 11 points.

Louisville 93, Virginia Tech 83--Louisville’s 16th-ranked Cardinals shot 54 free throws in beating No. 15 Virginia Tech in a Metro Conference at Blacksburg, Va.

Memphis State 99, Florida State 73--Dwight Boyd and Baskerville Holmes each scored 20 points, and every Memphis State player scored as the third-ranked Tigers won at Memphis, Tenn.

Bradley 74, Illinois State 67--Hersey Hawkins scored 19 points and Jim Les added 18 to lead No. 13 Bradley at Normal, Ill. Bradley is 24-1 overall and 11-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Illinois State is 11-11, 6-5.

North Carolina St. 103, Brooklyn 52--Chris Washburn scored a career-high 33 points, including 23 in the first half, to lead the Wolfpack at Raleigh, N.C.

Jacksonville 70, Western Kentucky 65--Otis Smith scored 26 points to lead Jacksonville (15-9 overall, 6-5 in the Sun Belt Conference) over No. 19 Western Kentucky (19-5, 8-3) at Jacksonville, Fla.
