No New Teams Move Into Times Top 10

Share

Except for a couple of position changes, the teams in The Times’ San Diego County basketball Top 10 remained the same as last week’s as 8 of the 10 went without a defeat.

The only losers were Morse and Point Loma, both of which lost once in the tough City Eastern League.

One team that wasn’t beaten, and hasn’t been in quite some time, is Castle Park. The Trojans won twice to move to No. 4 in the rankings and improve their overall record to 19-1. Since losing to Carlsbad in the Point Loma Tournament, Castle Park has won 11 straight games.

Another team in the Metro Conference that has been hot is Sweetwater. The Red Devils, since a loss four weeks ago to Castle Park, have won eight in a row and opened a two-game lead over Montgomery in the Metro-Mesa League.

Coach Dave Ybarra, who took over this season for Gary Zarecky, started slowly losing six of his first 13 games, but now Sweetwater appears headed for another league championship.

Meanwhile, Lincoln (12-6) and University (15-6) continued to win last week and lead their leagues. Lincoln is unbeaten in the City Central while University is the unbeaten leader of the City Western.

With all of the teams doing well last week, however, there was no room for either of those teams to move into the rankings.

Here is this week’s Times Top 10:

Pos. School (League) . . . Record 1. Poway (Palomar) . . . 18-3

2. El Camino (Avocado) . . . 19-2
