Southern Section Prep Teams Jockeying for Playoff Berths

Times Staff Writer

With just one week of play remaining in the regular season, more than half of the boys’ Southern Section basketball playoff berths have been determined.

In the top five divisions, 5-A through 1-A, nearly 60% of the fields have been filled. The 5-A, with just 37.5%, is the only division where less than half of the playoff teams are not known. In the 3-A division, 70% of the playoff spots have been taken.

Three teams qualify from most leagues. The 4-A, 3-A, 2-A and Small Schools divisions will be made up of 33 or more teams. Wild-card games, to be played Feb. 19, will be used to reduce the fields to 32 teams for first-round playoff action, which begins Feb. 21. The 5-A and 1-A divisions also open play Feb. 21 and require no wild-card games.
