The NCAA has muffled a song about the Mid-American Conference’s all-time scoring leader, Ron Harper of Miami (Ohio).

Miami officials and WOXY, an Oxford, Ohio, radio station that broadcasts the school’s basketball games, have been asked by the NCAA not to play the song because the name or picture of a player cannot be associated with a commercial project.

The “rap” record was written and performed by two disc jockeys and their group, “Slam and Jam.” Miami cheerleaders provided backup vocals. The name of the song is “Harper Valley.”

“The NCAA has nothing in its rule books to govern a situation involving a tape,” a Miami spokesman said. “It has rules for posters and calendars, but not songs. We were playing the tape before home games.”

He said the record was to be sold at a local grocery store last weekend, which the NCAA considered a commercial venture. Proceeds from the sale of the record were to be given to the university’s hearing and speech department.

The NCAA official investigating the matter was unavailable for comment.

In the latest NCAA statistics, Harper ranked sixth in the nation in scoring (24.1 points a game) and sixth in rebounding (10.9 a game).
