COLLEGE BASKETBALL : Cal Lutheran Hands One to Southern California, 95-85

Southern California College used a half-court press and fast-break offense to sweep to an easy 95-85 win Tuesday night over Cal Lutheran in Costa Mesa.
Southern California (18-9, 7-5) had a 13-point lead seven minutes into the game. Senior forward Ken Bardsley was the Vanguards’ leading scorer with 20 points.
Southern California shot 64% from the field. Their high-pressure defense forced 11 Cal Lutheran turnovers that resulted in easy baskets in the NAIA District III game.
Cal Lutheran (women) 67, Southern California 64--Cal Lutheran forward Kim Peppi broke a 60-60 tie when she made two free throws with 1:18 left in the game to help the Regals earn a 67-62 NAIA District III win at Southern California College.
Cal Lutheran outrebounded Southern California, 61-42. Junior forward Gloria Phillipps led the Regals with 20 rebounds.
With the win, Cal Lutheran (13-12, 5-10) assured itself of a share of sixth place. The Regals must beat Point Loma Nazarene Saturday to qualify for the conference postseason tournament.
Fresno Pacific 85, The Master’s 78--Fresno Pacific College overcame a 39-37 halftime deficit in an NAIA District III game in Fresno.
Ted Heinrichs paced Fresno Pacific with 23 points, while teammate Alvin Stewart added 20. The Vikings are 6-6 in conference, 13-13 overall.
Peter Coeler scored a game-high 27 points for The Master’s and freshman Phil Hahn had 20 points on 10-of-12 shooting.
