College Baseball : Chapman’s Hulshof Beats Azusa Pacific

Freshman Jon Hulshof (1-2) gave up two earned runs in 6 innings to gain his first collegiate win as Chapman College defeated Azusa Pacific, 5-3, Thursday at Hart Park in Orange.

The right-hander from Mater Dei High School walked two, struck out four and limited the Cougars to six hits, before being replaced by Rob Glissen. Glissen, a senior left-hander, finished the game to earn his first save of the season.

Freshman shortstop Ron Hubel was credited with the game-winning RBI in the fourth inning when he singled with the bases loaded to drive in sophomore Jim Areias. Azusa Pacific starting pitcher Steve Furchner walked four consecutive batters in the fourth before Hubel’s single.

Chapman is 4-5.

In community college action:

Rancho Santiago 11, Southwestern 1--Sophomore Ruben Gonzalez had a home run, two singles and scored two runs to lead the Dons past the Apaches in Santa Ana.

Gonzalez hit his first home run of the season with two aboard in the eighth to complete a four-run inning. The Dons overcame a 1-0 lead in the second with four runs. They went on to score once in the third and twice in the seventh before the four-run eighth.

Freshman catcher Chris Chase was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, including a double for the Dons. Infielder Steve Scarsone was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Mitch Swally doubled twice in four at-bats.

Right-hander Chris Shiflett struck out eight in seven innings to get the win. The sophomore transfer from USC gave up only two hits. Freshman left-hander Duane Madje worked the final two innings.

The teams meet again Saturday in Chula Vista.

Cypress 9, San Bernardino Valley 3--Designated hitter Rene Lican went 3 for 5, including a home run and four RBIs, to lead the Chargers past the Indians at San Bernardino. Lican doubled home three runs in the first inning and hit a solo home run in the sixth.

Dave Berry pitched eight innings to pick up his second victory against no losses for the Chargers (6-0). Mark Baca was 3 for 4 and Ray Hernandez was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Cypress plays host to San Diego Mesa today.

Saddleback 8, Rio Hondo 1--Bucky Bollinger homered and singled to lead the Gauchos to a nonconference victory at home over the Roadrunners.

Bollinger’s home run, a solo shot, highlighted a three-run first inning as Saddleback evened its record at 1-1. Eric Gasner was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and John Seeburger went 3 for 4 with an RBI to help Paul Prinz pick up his first victory. Prinz worked six innings, striking out seven and walking three.

The Gauchos travel to Long Beach today for a game with Long Beach City College.
