GIRLS CIF BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : North Hollywood Defeats Palisades

North Hollywood, playing at home, defeated Palisades High, 62-57, in the first round of the City Section 3-A playoffs Friday night.

The Huskies switched from a man-to-man to a 2-3 zone defense in the second quarter to try to contain Palisades’ Stacy Washington, who had scored the first three baskets of the first quarter and helped give Palisades a 23-21 lead with 3:52 left in the second quarter before going to the bench with her third foul.

After making only 3 of 13 shots in the first half, Latrelle Whitmore broke open the game in the third quarter for North Hollywood (12-5), scoring on 4 of 5 shots.

The Dolphins came within four points late in the fourth quarter but turned the ball over at crucial times, and Washington’s l5-point fourth quarter wasn’t enough for Palisades. She finished with a game-high 33 points.

In the last quarter, North Hollywood junior center Debbie Herz scored five of her l4 points and had four big rebounds.

City 4-A Division

Fremont 54, El Camino Real 50--El Camino’s high-scoring Michelle Kirby fouled out three minutes into the fourth quarter, and 30 seconds later Fremont forward Linda Broomfield went on a 13-point run to give Fremont its first lead of the game. Halfway through the quarter, the host Conquistadores also lost Allison Kincaid, who fouled out after scoring 13 and making eight steals.

El Camino converted 10 Fremont turnovers in the first quarter into a 17-7 lead. The Pathfinders committed 36 turnovers in the game, but in the final minutes it was the Conquistadores (12-7) who gave up the ball seven times and the lead for good.

Broomfield, a senior, scored 29 for the Pathfinders and Porcia Brown contributed 10. Fremont will play top-ranked Kennedy in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Van Nuys 60, Jordan 43--Van Nuys (16-2) used a balanced scoring attack and strong rebounding to offset 27 points by Jordan’s Kim Wilson to win at home.

Berndette Tillis, Shawn Price and Jeannie Washington of Van Nuys combined for 49 points, and Washington pulled down 20 of her team’s 43 rebounds, 29 of which were offensive.

3-A Division

San Pedro 62, Monroe 48--San Pedro forward Karyn Bolger made 9 of 17 shots, scoring a team-high 19, and pulled down 9 rebounds in the game at Narbonne High.

San Pedro (15-7) had a 9-2 scoring spurt early in the third quarter to go ahead, 40-20, with a little more than five minutes left in the period.

Point guard Tonia Reynolds of San Pedro handed off six assists and had six steals, while teammate Patti Pacheco had 12 rebounds.

Forward Tammie Beale scored a game-high 20 for Monroe (7-7).

Southern Section

1-A Division

An undersized Mojave team forced 28 turnovers and converted them into 30 points in defeating Calabasas, 64-51, in a first-round game at Mojave.

Mojave guard Tina Wilson led all scorers with 26, shooting from the perimeter and off steals made by a swarming Mustang defense. Mojave is 21-3.

Calabasas finished at 12-9. Junior forward Sandi Thompsen scored 19 of her 24 in the second half and finished with a game-high 16 rebounds.
