Girls’ Roundup : Cook Leads Barons in First Round : Fountain Valley Win Is an Easy One, 82-42

Jackie Cook scored 24 points and pulled down 18 rebounds, and teammate Melissa Handley added 19 points to lead the Fountain Valley High School girls’ basketball team to an 82-42 win over Pasadena in the first round of the CIF Southern Section 4-A playoffs at Rancho Santiago.

The Barons, the winners of the Sunset league, also got 16 points from Dawn Lawler. Susan Walin had eight assists.

Fountain Valley is 23-5 and will play Mater Dei on Wednesday. The Bulldogs finish the season 16-10.

In other 4-A action:

Mater Dei 50, Santa Barbara 44--Junior guard Geri Gainey scored 12 points and senior forward Kim Ellerman added 11 to lead the Monarchs past the Dons. Senior guard Noelle Manfre added 10 points for Mater Dei (21-7). The Monarchs play Edison on Wednesday.

Edison 75, Santa Monica 41--Denise Ogburn scored 20 points to lead the Chargers past Mustangs at Edison. Michelle Hennesey had 12 points 6 assists and 6 steals. The Chargers will play Lynwood Wednesday.

Hawthorne 67, Ocean View 57--The Seahawks lost in the opening round.

In girls’ 2-A playoff action:

Bolsa Grande 57, Fullerton 39--Mitzi Huff scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Matadors (12-9) to the win in Garden Grove. Roseann Flores added eight assists for Bolsa Grande. Fullerton’s Heidi Shikuma led all scorers with 18 points.

La Qunita 59, Edgwood 42--The Aztecs, the No. 1 team in the Garden Gove League, defeated the Trojans at La Qunita.

In 1-A action:

Connelly 63, Regina Caeli 26--Amy Vernetti scored 22 points, Sheila Duffy and Cathy Casey each had 15 rebounds to lead the Koalas past Regina Caeli at Servite. Connelly is 21-0.
