SAN DIEGO PREP BASKETBALL : Girls’ Roundup : Mascari Helps Lead Monte Vista to Win

Senior Paula Mascari, San Diego County’s second-leading scorer led No. 3 Monte Vista High School defeated No. 8 Fallbrook High, 76-42, in the first round of the girls’ San Diego Section 3-A playoffs Tuesday night at Monte Vista.

Mascari had 24 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists. Teammate Rene Fritzenkotter added 14 points and 15 rebounds.

The Monarchs (24-2) scored the game’s first 12 points and led 24-6 after the first quarter. They increased the lead to 35-14 by halftime.

Fallbrook’s leading scorer, Jennifer Jann, was held to eight points, and did not score in the second half.

Sophomore Melissa Smith scored 16 and Becky Aikin had 11 for the Monarchs. Sandra Stevens led the Warriors (16-8) with 13.

Point Loma 87, Hilltop 25--The top-ranked Pointers (25-1) ran up a 50-14 first half lead, overwhelming Hilltop (16-8). Point Loma stole the ball from the Lancers 25 times. Point Loma’s Chanelle McCoy led all scorers with 27 points. Terri Mann added 23 and Michelle Collum had 17 for the Pointers.

Southwest 78, Mission Bay 45--Although Mission Bay (14-9) was able to stay within three points of No. 2-ranked Southwest (22-2) in the first quarter, the Buccaneers could not hold on, as they committed 30 turnovers. Michelle Wilkes led Southwest with 24 points with Michelle Wilkes adding 20. Mission Bay’s Christina Willis was the game’s leading scorer with 25.
