SPIELBERG: THE COLOR SANGUINE

The most famous non-nominee in recent Academy Award history will be at the ceremonies Oscar night.

But Steven Spielberg turned down a request to be an award presenter.

A week after the director of “The Color Purple” was left out in the Oscar cold, Academy officials invited him to present the award for best actor. Spielberg declined. But he’s apparently holding no grudges. Through a spokesman, he told Outtakes, “I wouldn’t miss the ceremoniEs for anything.’

Spielberg’s complete statement:

“As this would have been my third time presenting, I felt under the current circumstances that my presence as a presenter might diminish the importance of the actual award for the category that I was asked to present.

“I will, however, be in attendance, as I wouldn’t miss the ceremonies on March 24 for anything.

“If asked to participate in the coming years, I would readily accept.”
