PCAA Roundup : UNLV Rolls to 94-76 Victory

Armon Gilliam scored 27 points and Anthony Jones contributed 21 to lead No. 9 Nevada Las Vegas to a 94-76 Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory over Cal State Long Beach Saturday night at Long Beach.

The Rebels (16-2 in the PCAA and 28-4 overall) will be the top-seeded team in the conference’s postseason tournament which begins Thursday at the Forum.

The 49ers (3-15, 7-22) trailed at halftime, 48-31, but closed the gap to 52-42 with 17:37 left. UNLV then went on a 22-12 spree to go ahead by 20 points with 9:33 remaining.

Utah State 65, New Mexico State 63--Guard Jeff Anderson hit a 35-foot jump shot as time ran out to give Utah State the victory at Las Cruces, N.M. The win also clinched a PCAA tournament berth for Utah State (8-10, 12-15).

Anderson, a 6-foot 3-inch sophomore, took an inbound pass with four seconds remaining. With two defenders flanking him, he sank a basket from inside the halfcourt line to send New Mexico State (10-8, 16-11) to its seventh loss in nine games.

Pacific 80, UC Santa Barbara 64--The Tigers eliminated the Gauchos from the PCAA tournament with the victory at Stockton.

Pacific, led by senior forward Rich Anema’s 21 points and 9 rebounds, finished the regular season at 9-9 and 16-13, tied for fourth place in the PCAA with San Jose State. Santa Barbara finished 7-11 and 12-15.
