San Diego Section Soccer : A Soccer Twin Bill Tonight : 2 Bonita Vista Teams Reach Soccer Finals

For the second time in three seasons, Bonita Vista High will be going for both the boys’ and girls’ San Diego Section 3-A soccer championships. In tonight’s finals at San Diego High, the Bonita Vista girls will play Poway at 5:30, after which the boys will play Valhalla at 7:30.

In 1984, the Bonita Vista boys won the 3-A championship beating Granite Hills, while the girls’ team lost in the finals to Torrey Pines.

This season, the Barons (17-2-3) are the top-seeded team in the boys’ playoffs, the only seeded team to survive the first round.

Bonita Vista is led in scoring by forward David Barragan with 23 goals. However, the Barons’ forte is defense, with goalkeeper Scott Sachrison’s 14 shutouts and 0.47 goals against average. Sweeper Mike Mollay, center fullback Mark Ostrander and center halfback David Comer are the other defensive standouts. In games where all four have played, the Barons have allowed a total of two goals.

Valhalla (17-4-1) reached the finals Wednesday with a 1-0 victory over 2-A champion Hilltop, the 10th shutout recorded this season by goalkeeper Brad Leahy. The Norsemen are also defensively oriented--by necessity. They averaged only two goals a game this season. Scott Dennison and Scott Hargrove are the season leaders with eight and seven goals, respectively.

“We have been a very low-scoring team, but you know the old saying, ‘One goal is as good as 10 in a victory,’ ” Valhalla Coach George Logan said. “We’ve had better teams in the past but this team has so much confidence in themselves, they’re capable of great things. These guys are so relaxed it’s incredible. They’re having a lot of fun.”

The No. 4-seeded Bonita Vista girls (20-3-2), who beat top-seeded Grossmont, 2-0, Tuesday to reach the finals, will face Poway (18-4-4) for the second time this season. In their first meeting, the teams played to a 3-3 tie that lasted through four overtimes before Poway won the game on a shootout.

That 120-minute match gave Poway Coach Gary Bradshaw an good look at Bonita Vista’s game plan.

“We know that they play with a very aggressive style,” said Bradshaw. “They like to get a lot of balls in the air and look for someone downfield to pass it to.”

Poway’s main scoring threat is forward Becky Villalobos, who led the Titans with 19 goals this season, but was held scoreless by Serra.

Charry Korgel, who had one of Poway’s two goals against Serra, is the team’s second-leading scorer, with 12 goals. On defense, the Titans are led by sweeper Wendy Ashworth and goalkeeper Kim Orr.

San Diego High will also be the site of Saturday night’s 2-A championships with La Jolla playing Ramona in the boys’ match at 7:30. San Pasqual plays University in the girls’ final at 5:30.

La Jolla Coach Jerzy Szyndlar claimed that the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal match between the Vikings (19-2-2) and top-seeded University City would be favored to win the championship. Ramona Coach Bill Pittsford, who watched the Vikings eak out a 1-0 win, agrees. But he still thinks his Bulldogs (16-2-5) will be tough.

La Jolla, following a 2-1 shootout win over Southwest, beat Western League rival University City on a second-half goal by Victor Zendayes, a forward playing his first game at midfield.

Ramona, which also had to go to a shootout to win its quarterfinal against Clairemont, had an even tougher time in its 3-2 semifinal win over San Marcos. The Bulldogs started the match Tuesday night at Grossmont, but finished Thursday afternoon at Poway (dense fog forced the game to be postponed with the score 2-2 with two minutes in the first sudden-death overtime). They only had to play 11 minutes Thursday, however, as Derek Drago’s header early in the second overtime gave Ramona the win.

In the 2-A girls’ final, No. 1-seeded San Pasqual (18-3-2) plays University (17-2-2). San Pasqual beat La Jolla, 2-0, Tuesday on goals by forwards Karin Lindsay and Dawn Evans. University’s Felicia Faro scored the winning goal in that team’s semifinal victory over Southwest Wednesday.
