Long Beach Women Gain PCAA Final Against Las Vegas

The Cal State Long Beach women’s basketball team has advanced to the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. tournament championship game without so much as a serious challenge from two opponents.

The seventh-ranked 49ers (28-3) defeated San Diego State, 116-74, Friday at the Forum and will play Nevada Las Vegas today at 11 a.m. to determine which team will get an automatic berth in the NCAA women’s tournament.

Nevada Las Vegas beat Cal State Fullerton, 80-75, in its semifinal.

Long Beach had beaten UC Santa Barbara, 94-63, in Thursday night’s first round.

Junior center Cindy Brown scored 27 points, junior forward Carol Brandt added 24 and senior guard Missy Rand had 18 to lead the 49ers, who caused 34 Aztec turnovers. Dee Dee Duncan scored 24 points for San Diego State.

Las Vegas (21-8) was led in its win by Donya Monroe with 23 points and Misty Thomas with 20. Guard Robin Holmes of Fullerton (11-18) led all scorers with 30 points.
