Orioles’ Gross Is in a Holding Pattern

Wayne Gross is taking a wait-and-see attitude about his future with the Baltimore Orioles.

“I haven’t asked anybody about my future,” said Gross, an infielder the past two years. “It’s a little early to speculate. Once we’re in the middle of exhibition games, I’ll feel more comfortable asking where I stand.”

Gross’ status is uncertain at best. In 1984, he played in 127 games, mostly at third base. Last year, he lost his starting job to Floyd Rayford in July. This spring, he is entering the final year of a six-year contract and is in danger of losing his job entirely.

“The only thing I’ve asked of the club is to tell me what my job will be,” Gross said. “If they want me to pinch hit, back up at first base, be a relief pitcher, that’s fine.”
