SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Master’s Shares Doubleheader

The Master’s College split a nonleague doubleheader at Occidental College on Saturday, losing the first game, 4-0, and winning the second, 6-3.

Shane Carriger (2-4), The Master’s starting pitcher, allowed three hits in the first game, but three errors hurt the Mustangs and allowed two unearned runs in the third inning. Left fielder Doug Magic led Occidental with a solo home run in the second inning.

Matt MacArthur, who was 2 for 4 in the first game, led the Mustangs in the second game. The junior shortstop was 3 for 4 with a two-run home run in the first inning and a two-run double in the fourth inning.

JC Baseball

Canyons 10, Mission 4--Don Erickson and Pete Kuld singled in runs in the first inning and College of the Canyons, ranked No. 1 in Southern California, piled up 18 hits before the rain started in a Mountain Valley Conference game at Valley College.

Canyons sophomore Frank Halcovich (3-0) pitched four perfect innings with four strikeouts.

Moorpark 5, Oxnard 0--Bob Ayrault struck out five and walked one in five innings before the rains hit at Moorpark College. It was the Western State Conference opener for both teams.

Ayrault also tripled in go-ahead run in the Raiders’ four-run second inning. Greg Conahey had a two-run double in the inning and also singled in a run in the fourth for Moorpark (1-0, 5-4).

High School Baseball

Arcadia 2, Thousand Oaks 1; Thousand Oaks 8, Arcadia 3--Thousand Oaks scored six runs in the second inning of the second game and went on to earn a split in a nonleague doubleheader.

Billy Shoen and Tom Neumayr limited Arcadia (8-1) to five hits in the nightcap. Shoen, the starter, picked up the win for Thousand Oaks (3-5).

Montclair Prep 10, Calabasas 6--In the ninth innning, Montclair’s Jeff Light broke a 6-6 tie with a lead-off home run to spark the Mounties (2-0) in a nonleague game.

Calabasas is 1-2-1.

Alemany 1, Leuzinger 0--Randy Thompson scored on a double steal with two outs in the sixth inning to lead the win in the Redondo Beach tournament. Alemany is 6-2. Leuzinger is 3-4.

Orange Lutheran 3, L.A. Lutheran 1--Orange Lutheran scored three unearned runs on three L.A. Lutheran errors to take the nonleague win.

Orange Lutheran pitcher Scott Wire allowed only two hits as the the Lancers evened their record at 1-1. L.A. Lutheran is 1-3.

Girls Softball

Burroughs won its semifinal game of the Simi Valley Softball tournament, defeating Kennedy, 5-0. The final game against Dos Pueblos was rained out.

Barbara Hofer, Kim Powers and Karen Knoop each collected a hit for Burroughs (8-0).

The makeup game for the final is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday.

Hart 6, Royal 3--Hart scored four unearned runs off three Royal errors in the fifth inning in a semifinal game of the Simi Valley Girls Softball tournament.

Royal is 3-3.

Westlake 8, Channel Islands 1--Westlake pitcher Malia Ouzts pitched a one-hitter against Channel Islands and received offensive help from Jill Vinson in the Marmonte League opener. Vinson was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
