Tennis Roundup : Turnbull Leads Chapman in Win Over Utah

Troy Turnbull, the No. 1 player in Division II tennis, led Chapman College to a 5-4 win over Utah Friday afternoon in a first-round match of the UC Irvine Tournament at Ridgeline.
Turnbull defeated Andy Olyphant, 6-4, 6-2, as the Panthers, the No. 1 Division II team in the nation, improved their record to 14-4.
Chapman meets Maryland, the tournament’s top seed, today at 1:30 in a quarterfinal match. The Terrapins defeated Illinois, 5-1, in their first-round match.
The tournament runs through the weekend with the championship match scheduled Monday at 1:30 at UC Irvine.
In other UC Irvine Tournament action:
UC Irvine 6, Indiana 3----Bruce Man Son Hing defeated Panos Kambederris, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, to lead the Anteaters (9-4). Darren Yates, the Anteaters’ No. 3 player, defeated Eoin Collins, 6-1, 7-6.
In a doubles match, Man Son Hing and Yates combined to defeat Steven Salumaa and Todd Jacker, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.
The Anteaters play Wichita State, which defeated Houston, today at Irvine at 1:30 in a quarterfinal match.
In other first-round matches, Arizona State defeated New Mexico State, 5-4; Duke beat Fresno State, 6-3; and Arkansas-Little Rock defeated Northwestern, 5-1.
