Santa Ana : Three Firefighters Hurt Battling Blaze in Attic

Share

Three Santa Ana firefighters were injured during an attic fire at 2217 Concord St. on Monday, Battalion Chief Jim Dalton said.

Capt. Joe King, the most seriously injured of the three, fell about nine feet from the roof of the home and suffered moderate head and back injuries, but no broken bones. King was treated and released from Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, Dalton said.

Engineer G.J. Garcia was pushed against a wall in the home when the ceiling under the attic fell in. Garcia suffered a minor back injury and was treated and released at the scene.

Firefighter Joe Vasquez sustained first-degree burns on his left wrist when he was pulling the ceiling down from under the attic. He was treated and released at the scene.

Although burns and falling ceilings are fairly common hazards to firefighters, “the roof thing is a little more unusual and contributed to the overall severity of this fire,” Dalton said.

The fire caused about $120,000 damage to the home. The cause of the fire was accidental but “we haven’t got it exactly pinpointed,” Dalton said.
