Senior left-hander David Bird pitched a complete-game, two-hitter and struck out 11 Wednesday night to lead Sonora High School to a 3-1 win over Montclair in the championship game of the Pomona Elks Tournament at Robert Welch Park in Pomona.
Bird (5-0), who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, gave up his only run in the bottom of the seventh inning when he walked the bases loaded and yielded a sacrifice fly. But he recovered and was able to finish without further damage.
The loss was the Cavaliers’ first after opening the season with 13 wins. By sweeping five games in the three-day, 32-team tournament, the Raiders improved to 12-1.
Bird has 67 strikeouts in 35 innings this season. He received offensive support Wednesday night from Jay Johnson, who had RBI singles in the first and seventh innings, and Rob Stuart, who hit a solo home run in the seventh.
Mitch Kaylor opened the game with a triple and scored on Johnson’s single to give Sonora a 1-0 lead, but the Raiders couldn’t extend it until the seventh, when Stuart homered to make it 2-0. Johnson then singled home Scott Einhorn later in the seventh to make it 3-0 before Montclair broke the shutout in the seventh.
In consolation action:
Western 7, HH Wilson 5--David Teller pitched and hit the Pioneers to victory. Teller had four RBIs with a single and two sacrifice line drives. He also struck out seven. Western (10-3) also was led by Rich Lodding and Mark Tranberg, who both were 2 for 3.
In North Santa Barbara County Tournament action:
Cabrillo 11, Capistrano Valley Christian 1--The Eagles were the first team in the eight-team tournament to score a run off the Conquistadors, but Capistrano Valley Christian was hardly a match for Cabrillo in the championship game at Santa Ynez High School. The Eagles (3-5) managed just five hits.
In Angelus League action:
Bishop Amat 9, Servite 8--The Lancers scored four runs in the second and third innings and then held on to defeat the Friars at Servite High.
Rich Velasquez hit a solo home run in the second and Brian Kelly added a solo homer in the third, as Bishop Amat took an 8-2 lead. But Servite came back to score five runs in the fourth inning, two on Corey Wentz’ home run, to cut the lead to 9-7.
The Friars added another run in the fifth but could not tie the game despite loading the bases with two outs in the sixth and getting a runner on in the seventh.
Jason Rolish went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Chris Ulmer and Carl Stone each had RBI singles in the fourth inning for Servite, which drops to 4-1 (7-4 overall) but still is in first place. Bishop Amat improves to 2-3 and 6-7.
Mater Dei 3, Pius X 1--Jim Oldham and Jim Austen both homered in the seventh inning to lift the Monarchs to the win at Pius X High in Downey. Left-hander Steve Watson (3-1) went the distance on a four hitter. Mater Dei is 2-3, 6-4.
