It’s half an hour after the Academy Awards, and already I’ve heard seven long and long-winded explanations as to why “The Color Purple” got 11 nominations and zero awards.

I’ve even had to put up with silly Roger Ebert, alone at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, his finger in his ear, racking his small brain to come up with why . Well, the answer’s simple: The academy decided it didn’t deserve any.

That’s not so strange--it’s happened before. “The Turning Point” got 10 nominations and received zilch, so let’s not make a big deal where none exists.

The academy voters preferred “Out of Africa.” Period. That’s it. End of story. Let it go.
