A moderate earthquake shook the San Francisco Bay Area, but no damage was reported. Authorities at the state Office of Emergency Services said the temblor, centered in Oakland, struck at 8:25 a.m. with an intensity of 4.0 on the Richter scale, and was felt over a wide area. “We had some telephone calls for a while,” an Oakland police spokesman said, “but nothing more serious than some plates rattling.
