Lack of common interest among the sponsors was given as the reason Friday for calling off the 1986 World Cup international team golf tournament.

The 32-year-old event was to have been played Nov. 20-23, although a site had not been selected.

“The IGA will continue to study alternatives for the future,” Harold L. Clark, chairman of the International Golf Assn., said.

The World Cup, which before 1968 had been known as the Canada Cup, involved two-man teams and awarded prize money both for team and individual performances.

The United States won 15 times, including four of five from 1963 to 1967, when Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer played. The last U.S. victory came in 1983 with Rex Caldwell and John Cook.
