Trainer Charlie Whittingham, who has won the San Juan Capistrano Handicap three straight years and a record 11 times overall, has entered three horses for the stake’s 47th running Sunday at Santa Anita.

Whittingham will send out Dahar, Strawberry Road II and Hail Bold King in the $400,000 race, which drew eight other entrants, including Jupiter Island, an English-bred standout making his first start in the United States.

The field, in post-position order: Talakeno, to be ridden by Pat Valenzuela, carrying 115 pounds; Semillero, Jack Kaenel, 116; Fabbiani, Derek Oldham, 111; Jupiter Island, Laffit Pincay, 123; Hail Bold King, Marco Castaneda, 117; Truculent, Eddie Delahoussaye, 116; Mountain Bear, Chris McCarron, 115; Dahar, Alex Solis, 124; Strawberry Road, Gary Stevens, 124; Schiller, Bill Shoemaker, 112, and Shulich, Fernando Toro, 113.

Because of overlapping ownerships, Dahar, Strawberry Road and Shulich will run as one betting entry, as will the pair of Semillero and Fabbiani.

Whittingham’s winners in the 1 3/4-mile race over the past three years have been Erins Isle, Load the Cannons and Prince True. The 73-year-old trainer has started 42 horses in the San Juan, and three times he has finished 1-2, including last year, when Prince True beat Estrapade by 1 1/2 lengths.

Dahar and Strawberry Road ran 1-2 in their last race, Dahar winning by 1 3/4 lengths in the San Luis Rey Stakes March 29.
