College Baseball : Glisson Throws No-Hitter for Chapman
Rob Glisson, a senior left-hander, threw a no-hitter Saturday to lead Chapman College to a 3-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first game of a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. doubleheader at Hart Park. The Panthers lost the second game, 5-0.
Glisson, who struck out eight and walked seven, ran into trouble in the eighth inning, when the Toros loaded the bases, and in the ninth, when they had two runners on base. But the former Pacifica High School star struck out two batters in each inning to end both threats.
It was the second no-hitter for Glisson (7-5). He also threw a no-hitter in his sophomore season. The Panthers (7-11, 15-25) scored all three runs in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Mike Cruz, a sacrifice fly by Rob Wolkoys and an error.
In the second game, Jim Pena went all the way on an eight-hitter and struck out three to pace Dominguez Hills (13-7, 25-14-1). Jon Beuder hit a three-run home run in the first inning, and Craig Grebeck and Fred Hanker each added solo homers in the sixth for Dominguez Hills.
In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. action:
Fresno State 13, Cal State Fullerton 4--Steve Bates, Harvey Brumfield and Kevin Evert each had three hits to lead a 19-hit Bulldog attack to give Fresno an easy win at Titan Field.
Fullerton (5-6 conference, 28-16 overall) has lost six of its last eight PCAA games. The Bulldogs (6-5, 21-21-1) move into third place behind Nevada Las Vegas and UC Santa Barbara.
Evert had two doubles and two RBIs and Brumfield had a triple and two RBIs. Dennis Springer went the distance and allowed 14 hits but was aided by four double plays. Pat Garman hit a two-run homer and Ken Garcia added a solo shot for the Titans.
Nevada Las Vegas 13, UC Irvine 1--Drew Siler hit a three-run home run and Jim Barbeau and Arned Hernandez each had solo homers to lead the first-place Rebels (9-2, 27-12) past the Anteaters (4-7, 15-19-2) at Las Vegas.
Greg Roscoe allowed four hits and struck out 10 to pick up the win, as Las Vegas avenged Friday night’s 8-4 loss to the Anteaters. Steve Moser added two doubles for the Rebels.
In NAIA District 3 action:
Southern California College 9-3, Cal Lutheran 5-1--Ron Nelson hit a three-run homer in the first game and Jeff Motske hit a two-run homer in the second game to help the Vanguards sweep the Kingsmen at Thousand Oaks. Motske’s homer gave SCC (9-5 in conference, 27-13 overall) a 2-1 lead.
