The Ventura County Gulls used a strong pitching performance by Todd Stottlemyre and a 15-hit attack to rout the Visalia Oaks, 12-1, on Saturday night in a California league game at Visalia.

The Gulls scored four runs in the second inning, single runs in the fourth and fifth and then erupted for a pair of runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth.

Stottlemyre (2-0) didn’t allow an earned run. He pitched seven innings and allowed just five hits while walking four and striking out four. Tom Wasilewsky pitched the final two innings for Ventura County and allowed only one hit.

Gulls catcher Greg Myers highlighted the ninth-inning outburst with a two-run homer. Ken Kinnard and Luis Reyna also drove in runs in the inning.

Darryl Landrum, the Gulls’ left fielder, provided the most spectacular hit of the night, clubbing a solo homer in the fifth inning that sailed far over the light tower beyond the 350-foot mark in left field.

Another Bulls batting star was Sandy Guerrero, the No. 9 hitter, who was 2 for 4 with four runs batted in.

Visalia scored its lone run in the third when Tim Senne walked, went to third on a two-base throwing error by Omar Malave and scored on Ed Yanes’ sacrifice fly.
