A 61-year-old Thousand Oaks woman was in critical condition Monday after being stabbed several times by a burglar who broke into her home, authorities said.

Several hours later, deputies arrested Paul Loren Barton, 18, at his Thousand Oaks home on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery, Ventura County Sheriff’s Lt. Hank Carrillo said.

Lavern Feinstein was admitted to Westlake Community Hospital in Westlake Village Sunday night for multiple stab wounds in the chest, shoulders and face, a hospital spokeswoman said.

According to Carrillo, Feinstein was alone in her home in the 1900 block of Stonesgate Street when she heard a banging on her front door. Feinstein refused to admit a man standing outside, but he forced his way in and stabbed her repeatedly, Carrillo said.

The intruder ransacked Feinstein’s home and ran off with several items, Carrillo said.

Barton is being held at Ventura County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Ventura County Municipal Court.
