BILLY BRAWL

Share

Isn’t it enough that we have all those ex-pro athletes--Billy Martin among them--hamming it up like a bunch of dumb lugs in those countless buddy-buddy beer commercials? Now a producer wants to put Martin in his first movie role--playing a brawling drunk in a bar.

Martin, employed (at press time) by New York’s WPIX-TV as an analyst for Yankee games, is reportedly set to do a cameo as a sloshed salesman in “Candyland,” from exec producer-director Robert Schnitzer, to shoot here in June. Given Martin’s history with both alcohol and violent incidents, it’s practically typecasting. And what with Peter Ueberroth’s zealous campaign to rid major league baseball of chemical abuse, you’d think it would be giving the commissioner fits.

Apparently not. A rep for Ueberroth said his office hasn’t been concerned with Martin’s thespian antics: “As long as he’s out of the league, he can do whatever he wants.”

National and American League rules forbid active employees from endorsing alcoholic products, said the rep. And the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms prohibits pro athletes from advertising any of those products--in uniform.

But didn’t we see Martin pitching beer when he was still helming the Yankees? “He’s been in and out of jobs so often for so long,” said the rep, “that I couldn’t tell you.”
