San Diego State’s football team completed five weeks of spring practice Saturday with an intrasquad scrimmage.

Junior quarterback Todd Santos stole the show by completing 13 of 20 passes for 158 yards and 3 touchdowns. Santos hooked up with wide receiver Anthony Conyers for a 35-yard gain, the longest play of the day.

The scrimmage was shorter--only one hour and five minutes--than the previous three and consisted of only 61 plays. Many first-teamers, including offensive guard Doug Aronson, defensive end Mike Hooper, defensive lineman Levi Esene, safety Steve Lauter and running backs Chris Hardy and Corey Gilmore, sat out Saturday’s scrimmage.

Of the second- and third-team players, freshman tailback Ron Slack performed best as he gained 50 yards on 10 carries. Split end Kenny Moore caught three passes for 23 yards, and sophomore tight end Kerry Reed-Martin gained 25 yards on three catches

Reserve quarterback Jim Plum completed 8 of 20 passes for 88 yards and 1 touchdown. Plum hooked up with receiver Brett Blanchard on a 28-yard play.

“The spring practice went very well,” first-year head Coach Denny Stolz said. “Obviously, the new coaching staff has a much better feel for the players we have on the team now than we did five weeks ago.”

The Aztecs will have a team meeting Monday, and will not practice again until mid-August. The coaches will begin recruiting this week for next spring. San Diego State opens its season Sept. 6 against Cal State Long Beach at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
