Although the district attorney has declined to file charges, San Diego State University is punishing 29 members of a fraternity involved in a November party at which a sorority pledge claimed she was raped. Sanctions against the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity members include letters of censure, probation, expulsion from the San Diego campus and permanent banishment from all California State University campuses. On Nov. 15, an 18-year-old Delta Gamma sorority pledge told campus police that she had been raped in a fraternity bedroom. Campus police said they believe three men sexually assaulted the woman, while others watched. Fraternity members maintained that the woman voluntarily had sex after drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana. Dist. Atty. Edwin Miller said prosecutors could not “prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a rape occurred.”
