The California Department of Forestry has declared the brush fire season in San Diego County officially open. Barritt Neal, state forest ranger, said opening the season paves the way for the department to hire an additional 95 seasonal firefighters. During the season, 14 fire station throughout the county’s wilderness areas will be manned around the clock.

Open campfires will be allowed only in approved campgrounds in the wild areas. Forest officials also suggest that residents whose homes are near dry brush remove all flammable vegetation within 30 feet of their homes.
