Kevin Eden of L.A. Baptist High has signed a national letter of intent to play golf at Southern Methodist next year. Eden helped L.A. Baptist advance to the Southern Section central regional tournament this week, but the Knights failed to advance to the team finals despite a 78 by Eden.

The L.A. Baptist senior shot a 74 in the Southern Section individual tournament to qualify for the Southern California Golf Assn. championships scheduled for June 9 at Lakeside Country Club in Toluca Lake.

John Balfanz was the only Cal State Northridge baseball player named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. first team. Teammates Jeremy Hernandez, Todd Mustin and Craig Burns were second-team selections.

Jay Knight, an outfielder at Cal Lutheran, was chosen to the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 first team. Teammates Dan Pastor, Rob Burden, Ed Howard and Kevin Wynn received honorable mention to the team. Cal Lutheran, which finished 25-17, was eliminated from the district playoffs May 5, when the Kingsmen lost to Point Loma Nazarene, 9-8.

UC Santa Barbara’s Vince Teixeira, was named to the All-Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball team. Teixeira, a senior third baseman from College of the Canyons, batted .390 with 15 home runs and 69 RBIs.

Ricky O’Kane will defend his North American full-contact karate championship on June 29 against Richard Hill. The fight, which is sponsored by The Jet Center in Van Nuys, is the main event on the card at the Country Club in Reseda.

Sherry Ruter and Dyan Miller of Moorpark College have signed to play basketball next season at Nevada Reno. Miller, from Chatsworth High, and Ruter, from Simi Valley, were starters for Moorpark, which placed third in the Western State Conference last season.

Another Simi Valley product has accepted a scholarship at a four-year school. Wendy Morgan, a 6-1 All-Marmonte League center last season, has signed at Pepperdine but won’t play basketball. Morgan, an award-winning vocalist, has accepted a music scholarship.

Alisha Portnoy of Northridge defeated Kathy Birkeland of Edina, Minn., 6-1, 6-2, on May 8 to advance to the second round of the Seventeen Magazine Tournament of Champions at the Mission Viejo Recreation Center.

Portnoy, 14, who was competing in the 14-and-under division, later lost to Erica DeLone of Massachusetts, 6-4, 6-3, and to Michelle Fry of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-1.

Players were invited to the tournament on the basis of their national rankings. Last year, Portnoy was ranked 90th by the United States Tennis Assn. This year, she entered the competition ranked ninth in Southern California in her age division.
