College Tennis : Amerlinck Loses in Quarterfinals

Chapman College’s Olivier Amerlinck was eliminated from the NCAA Division II men’s individual tennis championships Saturday at Cal State Northridge when he lost his quarterfinal match to No. 5-seeded Pat Emmet of Rollins College, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).

Amerlinck finished the season 35-10.

In other action, No. 2 Tom Goles and teammate Neil Smith each won semifinal matches to set up an all-Stephen F. Austin University final. Goles defeated Ken Olivier of East Texas State, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, and Smith beat Emmet, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3. They will meet in today’s final.

The top-seeded doubles team of Paul Landry and Bob Zoller, of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and No. 5-seeded duo of Neal Berryman and Roger White, of Abilene Christian, advanced to today’s final. In the semifinals, Landry and Zoller defeated No. 4-seeded Elliot Dun and Aleco Priovolos, of UC Davis, 6-4, 7-6. Berryman and White beat Rich and Ron Titus of Cal State Bakersfield, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Elsewhere in other college tennis:

Nicole Brechtbuhl and Lisa Ponce won the women’s doubles title to lead Fullerton College to the team title in the state community college tennis championships at the Cabrillo Racquet Club in Camarillo.

Brechtbuhl and Ponce defeated Karyn Thurmond and Lisa Newman of Orange Coast, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1. Julie Hammon of Cerritos defeated Santa Monica’s Anna Castaneda, 7-6, 6-2, for the singles title. Fullerton won the team title with six points. Palomar and Cerritos tied for second with four, followed by Orange Coast, Santa Monica and Foothill, which had three each.

In men’s action, Miles Walker of Marin won the singles championship, beating Sean Wade of Grossmont, 6-2, 6-1. Wade and David Calder won the doubles final, defeating Jeff Cohen and Simon Simone of Foothill, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Grossmont won the team title with 10 points, edging Foothill by one. Orange Coast was fourth with three points.
