Coastal Commission OKs Walkway to Link Surfrider Beach to Adamson Museum

Share

The California Coastal Commission has unanimously approved construction of the Malibu Esplanade, a textured concrete walkway linking Malibu Surfrider Beach and the historic Adamson House.

The 1,000-foot-long esplanade, a project of a Malibu citizens’ group, will include a viewing deck overlooking the famous surfing beach and stairways to the sand. The $1-million walkway will have the appearance of red tile, to blend with the old Spanish architecture of the Adamson House, which is a local history museum.

The Coastal Commission imposed two conditions on the walkway permit: No parking will be allowed on the esplanade, and sidewalk vendors will be prohibited. Project backers hope the esplanade will eventually link the beach area to the Civic Center across Pacific Coast Highway, near Pepperdine University.
