Zavala, Allen Named Co-Players of the Year in Mid-Valley League

San Fernando’s Frank Zavala and Granada Hills’ Bob Allen, whose teams tied for the Mid-Valley League baseball championship, were named the league’s co-players of the year Thursday. Zavala, a senior, batted .449 in league, while Allen, also a senior, hit .468.

The first-team all-league outfielders included San Fernando’s Chris Gonzalez, Kennedy’s Bill Picketts and Allen. The infielders were Zavala, Granada Hills’ Greg Fowble, Birmingham’s Ernie Perez and Kennedy’s Kevin Wittke.

Sean Casey of Granada Hills and Birmingham’s Jordan Cook were the first-team pitchers, while Troy Knox of San Fernando was the first-team catcher. Paul Halsch of Monroe made the first-team as a utility player.

San Fernando and Granada Hills both finished 11-4 in league and will begin the City 4-A playoffs on May 30.
