Heckel Is Named Coach at Pacifica

Rhett Heckel of Edgewood Private School in Santa Ana has been named the basketball coach at Pacifica High School.
Heckel, 27, served as Pacifica’s junior varsity coach from 1980-84 under former varsity Coach Ron Malmquist before moving to Edgewood, a kindergarten through eighth-grade campus where he organizes athletic programs. He will teach science at Pacifica.
“He already understands the program, the school and the community, so he won’t have to start over,” said Dr. Ken Calkins, Garden Grove Unified School District assistant superintendent for personnel.
Heckel replaces Brent Fair, who resigned in February after two seasons. In 1985-86, the Mariners had a 2-12 Empire League record, 6-17 overall.
