Awards Presented to Student Journalists : The Accolade of Sunny Hills High Takes Best Issue Honors

The student newspaper of Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, The Accolade, won the Best Issue award in the 1986 Student Journalism Contest, established this year to encourage and recognize outstanding journalism among Orange County high school students.

More than 200 students representing 29 high schools participated in the contest, submitting entries in six categories. Awards were presented Wednesday at a dinner for students, their parents and journalism advisers at the Los Angeles Times’ Orange County plant in Costa Mesa.

“I would like to commend the winners and all the participating students on their enthusiastic efforts and excellent work,” said Narda Zacchino, The Times’ Orange County editor, one of 12 contest judges. “Our high schools can be proud of the top-quality journalism that was displayed in this contest.”

Entries were judged by Zacchino, seven other members of the Times’ Orange County editorial staff and Jim Alexander, Jay Berman, Rick Pullen and Pat O’Donnell of Cal State Fullerton’s communications department.

Other winners are:

Honorable mentions in the Best Issue category for The Reflector of Orange High School in Orange and the Sword and Shield of University High School in Irvine.

Best News Story went to Lori Silver of Corona del Mar High School, Newport Beach. Honorable mentions were awarded to Steve Olds of Troy High School, Fullerton, and Edward Poon of Capistrano Valley High School, Mission Viejo.

Best Feature Story went to Heather Drew of University High. Honorable mentions were awarded to Amy Chen of Sunny Hills High and Debby Lu of Dana Hills High, Dana Point.

Best Editorial went to Julie Simpson of Capistrano Valley High. Honorable mentions were awarded to Sandy Miller of Ocean View High, Huntington Beach.

Best Sports Story went to Jennifer Moulton of Sunny Hills High. Honorable mention was awarded to Sandra Barnat of University High.

Best Feature Photo went to Grant Hucko of La Habra High, La Habra. Honorable mention went to Jim Ewing of Sunny Hills High.

As winner of the Best Issue category, the journalism department of Sunny Hills High was awarded computer equipment valued at $1,000. First-place winners in the writing categories will receive portable electronic typewriters, donated by Olympia International. The first-place winner in the feature photo category will receive a Nikon camera.
