Agoura Hills Plea for Aid to Parks Gets Fast $15,000 Payoff

Parks planners in Agoura Hills did not have to wait long this week to gauge the effectiveness of an $1,800 “gift catalogue” they have printed in hopes of soliciting donations from community businesses.

One of the first persons to thumb through the 18-page booklet immediately offered $15,000 worth of playground equipment for the city’s Chumash Park, Parks Director Joseph Donofrio said Wednesday.

That first copy was picked up by an anonymous visitor to City Hall, where 1,000 copies of the catalogue are being readied for distribution to Agoura Hills businessmen, he said.

“I was hoping there’d be a good response, but I was very surprised to see such an important initial donation,” Donofrio said.

Modeled after similar catalogues published in Poway, Placentia and Laguna Beach, the Agoura Hills booklet contains order forms for such items as $300 sandboxes, $500 park benches and $5 playground balls. It also invites sponsorships of events ranging from park concerts to Independence Day celebrations and Halloween carnivals.
