Athletics will continue as usual at Valley College next September, according to Virgil Watson, the school’s basketball coach. Watson is concerned that publicity over the Los Angeles Community College District’s cuts in sports programs may keep potential athletes from enrolling or staying at Valley.

“Actually, it may be a little better next year,” Watson said. “What money coaches lose in salary may be put back into the athletic programs and the kids will benefit.

“With all the press, some of the kids are wondering if there are going to be any sports--anywhere. I’ll call some of my players from last year who will be returning and I’ll see them on campus and we’ll start talking about what we’re going to be doing next year and then they’ll say, ‘Coach? Are we even going to have a program?’ ”

Valley is scheduled to field six of the seven teams it did last season--including basketball.

Former Valley College center Mario Lopez, who last season led the Monarchs in points, rebounds and blocked shots and is headed to Fresno State on an athletic scholarship, will play in the National Mexican-American Basketball Tournament June 20-22 at Schurr High in Montebello.

The tournament will feature athletes from Mexico, Mexicali, San Diego, San Francisco, San Antonio, Santa Fe, Phoenix and Denver.

Lopez (6-7) was an All-Mountain Valley first-team selection last season for the Monarchs.

Joining Lopez in representing the Los Angeles area are Fernando Lopez, who is from Alemany High and plans to attend Moorpark College; Eric Marquez, former player at Cal State Northridge; Rafael Meza, a member of CSUN’s California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championship team in 1984-85, and Erich Orozco, a former player from St. Genevieve High.
