Local News in Brief : Brush Fire Shuts Lanes on San Diego Freeway
A small but intensely burning brush fire in the Sepulveda Pass caused a headache for commuters on the San Diego Freeway on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
The fire started about 4:10 p.m. just west of the freeway near Sepulveda Boulevard and Mulholland Drive, Los Angeles city Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said. The thick smoke and flames closed the freeway’s southbound lanes for a short time and clogged traffic in both directions for more than two hours, California Highway Patrol Officer Dan Loughrey said.
Firefighters from 15 engine companies and two water-dropping helicopters extinguished the six-acre fire in an hour, Wells said.
There were no injuries, and no homes or autos were damaged, Wells said. The cause of the fire is being investigated, he said.
