East Cage Stars to Invade L.A.

Sonny Hill’s Philadelphia all-star prep basketball team will play three games against the best in Southern California starting today.

Hill is the legendary king of the prep basketball in the East, and his spring and summer youth programs are regarded by many as the best in the nation.

The first encounter will pit the Philly team , featuring 6-10 Clay Buckley, 6-7 Aaron Davis, 6-6 Dan Watts, and 6-6 Matt Blundin, against Los Angeles at 7:30 p.m. at Compton College.

Los Angeles is led by J. D. Green of Fairfax, David Whitmore of St. Bernard, Kevin Williams of Verbum Dei, Duane Cooper of Lakewood and Doug Meekins of Crenshaw, who was the MVP of the recently concluded L.A. Summer Games.

On Friday, Orange County will host the Philadelphia team at 8 p.m. at Rancho Santiago College in Santa Ana. Standouts on the Orange County team are Ricky Butler of Ocean View, Mark Georgeson of Marina and Mike Herring of Irvine.

The most formidable challenge to the visiting team probably will be at 8 p.m. Saturday at Valley College in Van Nuys. The opponent will be Mid Valley, the top team in Issy Washington’s strong Slam ‘N Jam League. Mid Valley features Sean Higgins and Chris Mills of Fairfax, Don MacLean of Simi Valley and James Moses of Serra.

Cost for each game is $5 for adults, $3 for students with ID card and $2 for those under 12.
