A 57-year-old Gardena woman was killed Saturday when her car veered off the Antelope Valley Freeway in Canyon Country and turned over three times, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The woman, whose identity was withheld pending notification of her relatives, was driving south on the freeway just north of Soledad Canyon Road about 1:45 p.m., CHP spokesman Alex Gonzalez said.

The car then veered suddenly from the middle lane, plunged down a 50-foot embankment and overturned. A woman passenger was thrown from the car when it turned over but suffered only minor injuries, Gonzalez said.

The driver, who was wearing a seat belt at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene. Gonzalez said investigators speculated that fatigue may have been the reason the driver lost control of the car.
