San Diego Roundup : Top 4 Super Stock Drivers to Race Saturday at Cajon

Four men are contending for the championship of the NASCAR Super Stock series going into Saturday night’s 25th anniversary races at Cajon Speedway.

Only 24 points separate Mark Meech (two wins and 224 points), Mike Hagerman (five wins, 222 points), Mark Norris (two wins, 210 points) and Gary Tamborelli (no wins, 200 points). Of the four, only Tamborelli, a first-year driver, has not won a title.

Street Stocks and Bomber Stocks events and the fourth destruction derby of the season also are scheduled. Jim Hamilton has won the three previous destruction derbies.

Racing begins at 7:30. Tickets for adults are $6 for the East Side and $5 for the West Side. Children’s tickets are $2. For more information, call 448-8900.

The San Diego Nomads, in third place in the Western Soccer Alliance, travel to Hollywood to play the first-place Kickers Saturday night at 7:30.

The Nomads went six weeks without a win until last week’s 2-0 victory over the previously unbeaten Los Angeles Heat.

Blue Porpoise Marine is sponsoring the first Great Fish-Off July 26. The 10 major divisions include: billfish, tuna (non-albacore), albacore, yellowtail, bonito, halibut, bass, most variety (team), most fish (team) and most fish (individual).

A $25 entry fee includes a T-shirt, hat and a fish dinner at the awards banquet, plus a chance at winning prizes and cash.

San Luis Rey Downs is hosting its fourth singles tennis tournament Aug. 9-10.

There will be an open division and a “B” division for both men and women. Trophies and prize money will be awarded to finalists and winners.
