Raiders Sign No. 1 Pick Buczkowski

Share

The Raiders drew within one of signing all their draftees Thursday when their No. 1 choice, defensive end Bob Buczkowski of Pittsburgh, agreed to a four-year contract.

Buczkowski became only the third No. 1 in the NFL to sign. The other two were Tampa Bay defensive back Rod Jones and Atlanta nose tackle Tony Casillas.

The Raiders are still without defensive back Brad Cochran of Michigan, their second pick. They say they’re close on him, too.

Buczkowski took his pre-camp physical Thursday, ate his first training table meal and attended the evening meetings.

“I wanted to be here (Wednesday, when camp opened),” Buczkowski said. “I came into town (Los Angeles), and everybody was on their way up here. Howie (Long) drove a few guys up here, and I’d have loved to come with them. But as long as I’m up here now, that’s all that matters.”

The Buccaneers signed Jones to a $1.1-million, three-year contract, which was expected to be a rough standard of what Buczkowski could expect. No figures on Buczkowski’s contract were available.
