Buczkowski Is Another Raider No. 1 Selection With a Bad Back

Another Raider No. 1 draft choice has a bad back.

Three years ago, the Raiders found out just after the draft that offensive lineman Don Mosebar had recently had back surgery. Now, defensive lineman Bob Buczkowski of Pitt has developed a back problem.

This time, though, the Raiders think the problem is minor. In Buczkowski’s case, it’s just a sore back, for which they sent him to a doctor Monday.

“Bob’s symptoms are not even close to Don’s,” Coach Tom Flores said. “But because of past experience, we just want to make sure.

“He’s sore in the side of his back. He twisted it on the first day. It’s not that he’s dragging his leg or anything. We just want to make certain.”

Raider Notes Brad Cochran, the No. 3 pick who is all that stands between the Raiders and perfect attendance in rookie camp, remains unsigned. The Raiders still think they’re close. Tom Flores says that a meeting between Cochran’s agent, Jim Abbott, and Raider executive Steve Ortmayer is near. . . . The Raiders started camp with four unsigned veterans. Two, Curt Marsh and Chris Bahr, have signed, and the club expects to sign fullback Frank Hawkins in the next two days. The Raiders are not sure of starting left guard Charlie Hannah, who has retained agent Howard Slusher, the hardest-liner of them all. Slusher is on better terms with the Raiders than most NFL teams, but a year ago, he had linebacker Bob Nelson holding out for a week.
