Raiders : Hannah Lone No-Show; Receiver Smith Among 15 Cut

All the Raider veterans except starting guard Charlie Hannah, the lone holdout, reported to training camp here Thursday. The team made room for them by cutting 15 players, one of them, surprisingly, wide receiver Jim Smith.

Two more veterans, kick returner Cle Montgomery and linebacker Bob Nelson, both coming off knee surgery, failed their physicals and were also waived.

Smith, acquired last year from the Pittsburgh Steelers for a fifth-round draft choice, was coming off three United States Football League seasons in which he caught 231 passes for 31 touchdowns.

With the Raiders, however, he was used sparingly. He caught three passes in six games, and suffered a groin pull. Though he was ready to return late in the season, he was never reactivated.

Nelson was a starter at inside linebacker for most of the 1980s, but lost his job last summer to No. 10 draft choice Reggie McKenzie after a short holdout and then arthroscopic knee surgery.

Montgomery was the Raider punt returner until the fourth game last season, when he was hurt at New England.

Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers put defensive end Fred Dean on waivers but the Raider-Dean negotiations are still going on.

One source said that Al Davis has decided to sign Dean and let him try to make the team. Dean, however, will have to give up his $125,000 reporting bonus, then, if he makes the Raiders, he will get the $125,000 as well as his $310,000 salary.

Hannah, the starting left guard, was a model of consistency last season, even during the offensive line’s early-season difficulties.

He earned $260,000 and is thought to want a raise into the $400,000 range. The Raiders are probably offering about $300,000 and may not go much farther.

Behind Hannah awaits young, huge Curt Marsh, however impatiently. Marsh, 25, 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds, is a former No. 1 pick and still a highly rated prospect. He suffered arm and hand fractures last season, but is healthy again and considered capable of big things if he can stay that way.

Raider Notes The Raiders and fullback Frank Hawkins agreed to contract terms. . . . Center Nick Haden of Penn State, a No. 7 pick in 1985, was among the players cuts Thursday. This suggests that the Raiders like this year’s No. 7, 270-pound Bill Lewis of Nebraska, who is being groomed as a possible heir to Steve Sylvester, the utility man who can back up anywhere on the line. . . . The release of Jim Smith seems to leave the race for the last receiver spot to Mark Pattison, a possession-type receiver from the University of Washington, and Rod Barksdale, a burner who was a track All-American at Arizona but did not play football in high school or college. . . . The others cut were all free agents: defensive end Glenn Howell of Arizona; linebacker Lee Blakeney of Washington State; cornerbacks Lee Miller of Cal State Fullerton and Rastee Oce of Northern Illinois; safety Tim Williams of North Carolina A&T; offensive lineman Carlton Williams of Utah; running backs Gerald Bean of Texas Tech and Ed Barbero of Cal; quarterback Fred Buckley of Stanford; punter Jeff Carter of Cal State Long Beach and placekicker Jim Mavor of Chico State.
