The family of a 6-year-old handicapped girl who died a few minutes after coming home from school filed a $10-million wrongful death suit against the Los Angeles Unified School District, claiming that school nurses failed to provide her with proper medical care. Carla Carillo, a student at Sophia Salvin Elementary School, needed her windpipe suctioned at least every two hours to breathe properly. But school officials failed to provide that treatment one day last October, despite the girl’s requests for help, according to the suit. The girl died “within minutes” of arriving home on the school bus, the family said. School officials could not be reached for comment.
