San Diego Roundup : 58th County Open Will Start Saturday

The 58th San Diego County Open golf tournament begins Saturday at Cottonwood Golf Club. More than 200 golfers, 47 with handicaps of 5 or lower, have entered the $34,000 event.

Play begins on the Ivanhoe course at 6 a.m. Saturday, switching to the Monte Vista course Sunday. After Sunday’s round, the field will be trimmed to 48. Two 18-hole rounds will be played at 6:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Monday.

The winner will receive $6,120, second $3,434 and third $2,168. Amateurs will be playing for $3,000 in merchandise awards. There is no admission charge. For more information call Jack Daley at 297-9660.

Terry Rodgers is among four San Diego high school football players who will be playing in the 35th Shrine North/South All-Star football game Saturday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Rodgers was the 1985 Times’ Back of the Year at Sweetwater High. San Pasqual’s Tom Dabasinskas, the Times’ Lineman of the Year, Orange Glen’s Craig Hartsuyker and Vista’s Brian Lockwood also will play.

The San Diego Lions Club and the San Diego Padres will sponsor a 10K run, and the TAC (The Athletic Congress) will hold its district championship Sunday at 7 a.m. at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

Street stocks, bomber stocks and sportsmen (older cars) and the fifth destruction derby of the season also will be run.
