Half a dozen range fires continued out of control in Utah, while firefighters in Idaho gained some headway against several brush fires that have charred thousands of acres in that state. In eastern Oregon, crews were mopping up forest fires that have burned more than 90,000 acres of woodlands. U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management officials said they could not predict when the two biggest fires, in Utah’s Rockwell and Little Sahara recreation areas, would be contained. Firefighters battling three major blazes in tinder-dry Idaho brush said they were gaining the upper hand on all of them.
